Gay Friendly Gyms Gran Canaria
Gay Friendly Gyms in Gran Canaria
THE WELLNESS CENTER is located on the top floor of Holiday World, Campo International, which is a 4 euro taxi ride or 20 minute walk from the Yumbo Center. A day pass is 15 euros Monday to Saturday, 9 euros on Sundays, or 55 euros per week. Open from 8am-10:30pm Monday to Friday, 10am to 6pm on Saturday and 10am to 2pm on Sunday. It’s more of a fitness centre than a hard-core lifting gym, but the facilities are good. Dumbbells up to 46kg. Almost all free weights are Olympic, with bench press and squat rack. Air conditioning. New technogym machines (the kind you can put an electronic key in to record your progress). Clean showers and changing area. Pleasant working out environment with big windows overlooking the hills towards the motorway to Las Palmas. There is a pool and a spa on the roof. No need to bring a padlock – lockers have 1 Euro (returnable) locks. The only downside was that on a few machines I could lift the whole stack and I’m not that big, so if you’re very strong you might want to stick to the free weights area. TENIS CENTER MASPALOMAS, Avda. de Tjaereborg, Campo de Golf. A 4 euro taxi ride or 20 minute walk from the Yumbo Center. A day pass is 10 euros or 35 euros per week. Open from 8am-10pm Monday to Friday, and 9am to 8pm on Saturday and Sunday. The gym is in the basement, making it cooler to workout, it has a chinning bar at the right height, and dumbbells ranging from 2.5 kg to 40 kg. Also 50% of the machines are brand new “GYM80″ equipment and 50% of the free weights are Olympic plates and barbells. The drawbacks are that 50% of the free weights are much older, and the other 50% of the machines are very old with no numbers on the weights. This is my favourite gym and seems to be popular with locals. (www.teniscentermaspalomas.com)
BEACH GYM On the top floor of the shopping center in San Agustin. A 5 euro/ 7 mins taxi ride from the Yumbo Center. A day pass is 10 euros or 35 euros per week. Open from 8am-10pm Monday to Friday, and 10am to 2pm on Saturday and Sunday. Dumbbells up to 50kg. Some Olympic weights. In November 2005 Tor from Norway emailed to say “Although not great, the number of machines and free weights was much better then the Biceps gym and they were all well marked. Best of all, however, was that the showers were very nice and clean.” There’s a good view of the beach while you work out. (www.beachgym.com)
Sea view from the Beach Gym
BICEPS GYM, Avda. de Tirajana, Playa del Inglés. Just a few minutes walk from the Yumbo Center. A day pass is 9 euros or 30 euros per week. Open from 8am to 10pm Monday to Friday, 2pm to 9pm on Saturday and 5pm to 9pm on Sunday. It has a squat rack, odd assortment of dumbbells, and some big lumps working out there. I found it very hot, there’s no Olympic weights and it’s difficult to tell what weight any of the machines are. Limited facilities for changing/ lockers. Advertises heavily in the gay press.
HEALTH CLUB MASPALOMAS, Avda. Neckermann, Campo de Golf. A 4 euro taxi ride or 20 minute walk from the Yumbo Center. A day pass is 7 euros or 19 euros per week. Open from 9am to 10pm Monday to Friday, 10am to 3pm on Saturdays and closed on Sundays. Open air gym with old Gervasport machines, technogym dumbbells and a small amount of free weights. If you like working out outside this could be the place for you, but as I go to the gym to avoid the sun when it’s hottest I didn’t stay. (www.healthclubmaspalomas.com)
As always, consider advertised opening hours in Gran Canaria as a rough estimate. Shops, gyms and restaurants often close for siesta/ maintenance/ holiday with no warning.
